All of us have heard and watched Ramayan when we were kids The holy book speaks of the victory of good over evil. Our knowledge of Ramayan is limited to the tales of faithful lord Hanuman, unbeatable lord Ram, purest of all Goddess Sita, fearless Laxman, and the most intelligent but lustful and proud Ravan.
The character we know nothing about is of Lord Ram’s elder sister Shanta and a Rishi without the presence of whom Ramayan wouldn’t be possible. She grew up to be a beautiful princess with qualities of a warrior. Dashrath loved her but the pain of not being able to give a prince to his kingdom was something he couldn’t bear. He married Sumitra and Kaikeyi with a hope to give an heir to Ayodhya. But years went by and Ayodhya never received good news of their awaiting.
Raja Romapad of Ang who was Husband of Vershini, elder sister of Kaushalya were childless Raja Dashrath and Raja Romapad were childhood friends, as they studied in the same Ashram. Once, when Vershini was in Ayodhya, she was mesmerized with child Shanta and loved her so much which instigated her to ask King Dashratha for the adoption of Shanta. Kaushalya, sympathetic at her sister’s plight, immediately said yes without thinking, knowing how loved Shanta would grow up and the privilege she would have as the only child in the kingdom of Anga, present day Bhagalpur in Bihar, India.
