Dr. Manju Shiwach is an Indian politician and a member of the 17th MLA Modinagar of Uttar Pradesh, India. She represents the Modinagar constituency of Uttar Pradesh and is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is a successful gynecologist doctor as a profession.
MLA :
A MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district to the legislature of the state government in the Indian Government system. Each state has between seven and nine MLAs for every MP (Member of parliament) that it has in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s bicameral parliament system.
Only a member of the legislative assembly can work as a minister for more than 6 months. If a non-member of the legislative assembly becomes a Chief Minister or a Minister, he must become an MLA within 6 months to continue the job.
Role:
An MLA may be required to fulfill four distinct roles:
The role of the Legislator involves understanding the spirit of existing laws, planning new laws and studying and supporting or opposing the approval of new laws.
As a representative of their constituency, a member may comment on behalf of constituents, represent view points, or assist in problem-solving.
An MLA is also a member of an elected party assembly. In this function, they may be involved in planning and organizing the strategy in the house, supporting the cause and its decisions and developing expertise in given subject areas.
Depending on their party political wealth, the MLA may serve as a cabinet Minister.
Election Process of an MLA:
- The elections are held after the expiry or retirement of the current assembly’s, generally after a period of every five year.
- Every State is divide into different constituencies or specific area on the basis of their population.
- Candidates belongs to these constituencies are voted for by citizen over 18 years of age.
- Any number of candidates can stand for elections from a constituency but each one of them should fulfill the eligibility criteria.
- The candidates are required to re-form for themselves by expressing their plans and concerns of their constituency.
- The members are directly elected through an electorate.
- The voting is done through a secret ballot system to ensure or confirm that only the voter knows for whom he/she has voted.
- The power of nominating a member of the Anglo-Indian community is in the hands of the governor of a state.
